GRC

Innovative Admixtures for Lightweight, High-Performance Concrete

Glassfibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC) is a versatile composite material that combines cement mortar, alkali-resistant glass fibres, and specialist admixtures such as superplasticisers and pozzolans. These fibres act as micro-reinforcement, enhancing tensile and flexural strength while allowing for thin, lightweight sections. GRC is widely used in architectural and civil applications where strength, durability, and design flexibility are essential.

Angled view of building from bottom to topAt Oscrete, we support GRC producers with tailored admixture solutions that improve workability, surface finish, and long-term durability. Our technical team works closely with manufacturers to optimise mix designs and troubleshoot production challenges, backed by our in-house laboratory and New Product Development programme.

Why GRC?

GRC offers a high strength-to-weight ratio, making it ideal for large panels without adding significant structural load. It’s resistant to corrosion, weathering, and fire, and can be molded into intricate shapes and textures which are perfect for both modern and classical designs. Its sustainable profile also makes it attractive for environmentally conscious projects, using less raw material than traditional concrete and accommodating recycled content.

From architectural cladding and decorative elements to civil infrastructure and interior design, GRC’s versatility is unmatched. It’s used to create lightweight façade panels, ornate columns and cornices, durable furniture and countertops, and even street furniture and drainage channels. Notable projects include the 240 GRC ceiling panels installed at Sydney’s Victoria Cross Station and bespoke façade systems across Europe.

Application Benefit
Architectural cladding Lightweight, detailed finishes with reduced structural load
Decorative elements Captures fine detail for columns, domes, and sculptures
Furniture & interiors Durable and moldable for sinks, vanities, and wall features
Civil components Ideal for ducts, barriers, and urban infrastructure

Production Techniques

GRC can be manufactured using several methods, each suited to different project needs. The spray-up method delivers high fibre content and directional strength, making it ideal for structural panels and large-format cladding. Premix GRC, on the other hand, is easier to handle and cast, making it perfect for smaller or artistic pieces. Hybrid systems combine a mist coat for surface finish with a fibrous backer for strength — offering a balance of aesthetics and performance.
